How to clean up your Downloads folder for good

Why this folder always overflows

It is the default destination for every browser, and hardly anyone changes it. Every file lands there without a decision: you click, it drops in, and sorting gets pushed to later.

The folder then mixes three kinds of files that have nothing in common: disposable ones (installers, drafts), precious ones (invoices, contracts, certificates) and undecided ones. As long as the three are mixed, you cannot delete anything with peace of mind.

Step 1: set everything aside before sorting

Select everything in the folder and compress it into a ZIP archive, for example downloads-2026.zip. You get a snapshot of that moment, and you can empty the folder without losing anything.

That single move unblocks the situation: the folder is clean again in thirty seconds, and sorting becomes a separate task you can do whenever you have time.

Step 2: organize the archive

Drop that archive into Trifouille. “By type” mode separates documents, images, spreadsheets, archives and the rest; “By date” mode rebuilds the timeline, handy for finding an invoice when you know the month but not the name.

The preview shows you the folder tree before downloading. Windows installers (.exe, .msi) land in “other”, macOS disk images (.dmg) in “archives”: take a look, that is often where the most wasted space hides.

Step 3: delete without regret

Once you have the organized archive, sorting becomes obvious, because decisions are made one folder at a time rather than one file at a time.

• Installers (.exe, .dmg, .msi): safe to delete in most cases
• Invoices and contracts: archive them by year
• Images: move them into your photo library
• Archives and large files: move them to an external drive

Keep it from happening again

The single most effective habit is to change your browser's default download location to a “To sort” folder, separate from your real working folders. The name alone reminds you it is a waiting room, not a storage place.

Then get into the habit of emptying that waiting room once a month, or repeating the full process twice a year. Five minutes on a regular basis beats a full day of sorting every three years.

Change your browser's download folder

Every browser lets you choose where downloads go, or ask each time where to save. Asking each time is the most radical option: it forces a decision at the moment you still know what the file is.

Automate the cleanup on Windows

Windows Storage Sense, under Settings → System → Storage, can automatically delete files in your Downloads folder that have not been opened for 1, 14, 30 or 60 days.

It is effective, but there is no safety net: a document you never reopened disappears too. Reserve this option for a folder you truly treat as a waiting room, and combine it with the full archive-and-sort process described above, twice a year.
